Brief Description

The  'Orion Powerhouse Gallery' comes to life in the warmer months when Akaroa is full of visitors and holiday-makers. The gallery hosts exhibitions featuring artists from Banks Peninsula and beyond, many of national and international recognition. It also provides a wonderful venue for intimate musical events and varied workshops throughout the year.

Update August 2017

The Gallery has seven exhibitions confirmed for the coming season:

1. French Festival Gallic Offerings - Friday 6 October- Sunday 8 October 2017.

Francophile paintings, bric-à- brac, brocante etc...

2. Summer ‘Cash & Carry’ – Friday 20 October – Sunday 19 November.  Twenty plus artists participating.

Including  Kelvin McMillan, Jean Harris, Ken Porter, Jane Thomas, Janey Lovell-Smith, Kris Waldron, Nancy Tichborne, Ivan Button, Stephanie Chrisp, Meg Errington, Peter MacKay, Elk Bergkessel, Janet Guard, David Tait and Annette Moore. Plus hopefully Hugh Wilson and Dave Walker.

3. Sarah Ford & Friends – Friday 24 November – Sunday 17 December. Local artists & potters at their best.

4. Janet Marshall – Friday 29 December – Sunday 14 January 2018. From Nelson, Janet is internationally known for a variety of work -  NZ bird paintings, NZ Post stamps & her fascinating 'metal-point' art. She will be demonstrating this ancient art form during the exhibition.

5. Svetlana Orinko – Friday 19 January – Sunday 4 February 2018. Since she arrived in Canterbury from the Ukraine in 1992, Svetlana has rapidly become an accomplished & popular NZ artist.

6. Hullaballoo – Friday 9 February – Sunday 25 February 2018. Hullaballoo is an artists collective from Cromwell - an entertaining mix of  professional & amateur artists. To have a small community group exhibiting in our small community will be refreshingly different!

7. Botanical Art Society of New Zealand – Friday 2 March – Sunday 18 March 2018.

A  Christchurch-based group - has had several successful exhibitions in recent years.
