Blythcliffe | Akaroa – New Zealand

Akaroa Chines

Built in 1857, the wonderful Blythcliffe is listed as an Historic Place Category 1 with Heritage New Zealand, Pouhere Taonga, and sits graciously within the charming and Historic Area of the French settlement village of Akaroa, along the waterfront of Akaroa Harbour on Canterbury’s spectacular Banks Peninsula. Blythcliffe is one of Akaroa's oldest and most loved grand old houses; our own stately home. We are an easy 5 minute stroll to excellent cafes, restaurants and the many other attractions Akaroa has to offer, also centrally located for trips further afield.

We are really pleased to be able to offer Blythcliffe guests a 10% discount with Akaroa Dolphins; please enquire for further details.

Blythcliffe’s garden is available for weddings and events; please see separate listing. We also offer two Bed and Breakfast guest options –

The Stables
A private, warm and sunny, self contained converted stable building that very comfortably accommodates two and is adjacent to the main house and grape lined sunny courtyard – a wonderful breakfast spot. The space is open plan and generous with one (extremely comfortable!) super king sized bed. Single roll out beds are available on request at $50 each, these are suitable for children or teenagers. There is a sitting room and dining area, with a kitchen at the far end and a self contained bathroom with claw foot bath, candles and bubble bath provided!

The Rose Rooms
The Rose Room is a wonderful light and sunny queen sized room on the north western first floor corner of the main house. French doors open onto the balcony where you can enjoy breakfast or a glass of wine with the birds. Here, you have wonderful views over our gardens and croquet lawn to Akaroa Harbour. Your private bathroom is right next door to your room, also accessed via the main hallway.

For friends and families with older children – the balcony area is not suitable for under 10’s – you can add a Queen sized and/or a Twin room. These rooms are all on the same floor and will share the same bathroom. They are therefore ONLY bookable directly with Blythcliffe in tandem with The Rose Rooms, each extra room is $160 per night including continental breakfast.

Guest Access
You will have full access to our beautiful grounds, including our croquet lawn, petanque terrace and the Blythcliffe private forest, protected by a conservation order for many years and therefore containing many spectacular examples of native trees, plants and birds. Some trees are hundreds of years old. We will be happy to guide your bush walk, adjacent to the Balguerie Stream as it tumbles over its rocky bed. Feed our tame eels and marvel at the song and antics of the many unique species of NZ birds. Or just lie in the sun and enjoy the peace and privacy of our beautiful garden.

John and Lesley live in the main house at Blythcliffe, it is their private home but they love meeting people! They'll be very happy to talk about their home and the surrounding stunning Banks Peninsular. They're also very well travelled around NZ, and can offer some handy local travel knowledge should you need it.

Both spaces have a rate of $255.00 per night that includes a delicious, self served continental breakfast and WiFi. Cooked breakfast (with eggs from our own free range chickens and NZ free range bacon) is available upon request at an extra charge of $20.00 pp.
