Most of Banks Peninsula is rural farm land or nature reserves. Rural & Farmstay properties around Akaroa and the Bays offer a real taste of Kiwi farming culture from traditional beef and cattle to the more exotic alpaca farm and secluded rural retreats. Share wholesome home cooked meals with your hosts, take guided tours of their properties or get away from it all into the dark sky nights and sounds of the bush and the ocean. Wake up to birdsong and stunning scenery seemingly a million miles from the city but in reality just over an hour away.
Coombe Farm is set in the peaceful Takamatua Valley 5 minutes drive from Akaroa. An oasis of serenity away from it all, on a working 850 acre sheep farm. Staying here is both comfortable and informal, peaceful and private. Choose between the historic farm house and the delightful shepherds' hut with its own outdoor bath. Walk the hills strewn with native trees and bush, abundant bird life, creeks and waterfall. Enjoy the tranquil setting and sea views or relax on the verandah surrounded by the organic garden.

Nancy’s Retreat at Lyndhurst is a farmstay set high in the hills of Okains Bay, 2.5 km from the Summit Road – look for the red roofs and rustic “Lyndhurst” sign on the right.
The homestead dates back to early 1870’s and has been a major restoration project for us. “Nancy’s” is named after Nancy Moore the last of the original Moore family who arrived in Okains Bay around 1851 and were the original settlers of this property in 1876. Nancy’s is a separate self contained unit with an antique brass bed and feather duvet, kitchenette, bathroom, TV (free to air) and DVD player.
