Brief Description

The Akaroa Art Gallery (previously the 'Orion Powerhouse Gallery') comes to life in the warmer months when Akaroa is full of visitors and holiday-makers. The gallery hosts exhibitions featuring artists from Banks Peninsula and beyond, many of national and international recognition.

Steve Helps and David Tait are two local artists who live and paint on the Peninsula. This Easter exhibition portrays Banks Peninsula in all its moods and seasons .

10am to 4pm daily.

Another Series of Forums on Art in all its Perspectives

•       Saturday 15 June 4 to 6 pm
Lesley Burke- Harding
TV/Films clothes design.  TBC

•       Saturday 20 July – 12 to 1 pm Lunchtime piano recital – Gabriel Hope.
Mixture of classical and modern.

•       Saturday 17 August – 4 pm to 6 pm - Edward McGuinniety – the stories behind artwork.  “bring in a painting, piece of pottery whatever means something to you. 

•       Saturday 21 September – Car-pooled trip to Christchurch Art Gallery - all day parking in Gallery Car Park.  Guided tour with Akaroa Gallery member Cynthia Ellis one hour, no charge, max 25.  Lunch at Gallery Café.

•         Then a two hour guided Christchurch Street Art tour (1pm) with Dr Reuben Woods who has a PhD in Christchurch Street Art!  From Reuben “We have hosted a number of senior groups, and they have been fine with the walking involved – fortunately, Christchurch’s flat terrain helps!  We also ensure groups have the opportunity to rest or refresh if needed.”  This followed by a guided tour of Turanga – the wonderful new central library.  Forum members free (excluding lunch, car-parking fee & petrol) remainder $10 per person.

•         Friday 25 October  (5 pm – 7 pm) Members (by RSVP) & invited guests only opening of the Kelliher Art Exhibition.  With an introduction by Kelliher Trust representative.  To be treated like a forum but with no entry fee!

Note:  Venues will vary but most will be undertaken in the Orion Powerhouse Gallery, 1 Rue Pompallier, Akaroa
Member’s subscription for attendance at all Forums is $20 or $10 admission fee per forum. Non-Members - $10 per Forum

Coming up...Kelliher Art Trust exhibition… To be held at the historic Akaroa Powerhouse Gallery from 26th October until Sunday 24th November 2019.

This is only the second time in 63 years that a selection of Kelliher paintings has been shown in the South Island…

The paintings to be displayed are iconic New Zealand landscapes - either Kelliher competition prize winners or ones acquired/commissioned by the Kelliher Trust. With artists including:

Peter McIntyre, Cedric Savage, David Barker, Austen Deans, Colin Wheeler, Robert McDowell, Richard McWhannell, Michael Smither, Rita Angus, Stanley Palmer, Dick Frizzell, Toss Woollaston, Douglas Badcock & others prominent in NZ’s art history.

Entry fee is $5 per person but extra donations would be appreciated. All proceeds go the rebuild of the Akaroa Hospital - a victim of the 2010/2011 earthquakes. Group guided tours may be available on request.

A unique chance to view paintings not often seen in one place! At the same time enjoying all the pleasures of Akaroa including  dolphin & penguin watching, walks of all sorts, great cafes & restaurants, legendary fish & chips plus the outer bays.
