Details and Contact

Our big news is “The Kelliher in Akaroa”….

I am delighted to report that the Akaroa Art Gallery has been selected to present an exhibition of Kelliher paintings in October/November this year.  Not only is this an honour for our humble little gallery but for Akaroa too - it will be only the second time in 63 years this unique collection has been shown in the South Island.

While you may or may not have heard of the *Kelliher Art Prize - a national competition which ran from 1956 to 1977 -  I am sure you will know some of the names of the artists whose iconic paintings will be on our walls:  Rita Angus, Douglas Badcock, Peter McIntyre, David Barker, Cedric Savage, Austen Deans, Rodger Harrison, Peter Mardon, Colin Wheeler, Toss Woolaston, Brian Halliday, Robert McDowell, Michael Smither, Richard McWhannell, Stanley Palmer and Dick Frizzell.

This event will be possibly the biggest held in the gallery since its inception 42 years ago.  We will be promoting it in the Press, Dominion, various magazines, social media and Stuff etc.  Hence it is anticipated the exhibition will attract visitors from all over the South Island & lower North Island. A rare honour indeed for Akaroa and for our gallery!   It will also be another opportunity for us to contribute towards our hospital’s rebuild.  Please let all your relations, friends, colleagues etc know about this exhibition.

The Kelliher Art Trust is a philanthropic organisation which likes to get involved with smaller communities. I have been up to Auckland to talk specifics with the secretary & curator of the collection. They have been down here a couple of times & think that Akaroa is a good fit for them. They also like the fact that we are raising funds for such a worthy cause. In fact they have decided to match our $5 koha/entrance fee dollar for dollar! They also cover all freight & insurance costs. Which means most of the proceeds will go to the hospital.

We also have three forums coming up:

Friday 25th October - 5pm to 7pm: members, invited guests & VIPs' opening for "The Kelliher in Akaroa”.

Saturday 26th October to Sunday 17th November - 10am to 4pm daily: “The Kelliher in Akaroa”.

Saturday 30th November  - 10am to 4pm daily: The annual Cash & Carry Exhibition starts. Members only preview is on Friday 29th - 5pm to 7pm.
