April in Akaroa and the Bays arrives like a gentle exhale.

The hills begin their quiet costume change, trading summer greens for amber, gold, and russet tones that ripple down toward the harbour. Mornings carry a crisp edge, the kind that wakes you up properly, while the days stretch out into long, unhurried afternoons made for wandering, browsing, and soaking it all in.

Out on the water, the harbour settles into a glassy calm, reflecting sky and hillside like a painted scene. As evening falls, there’s a welcome chill in the air, perfect for retreating indoors, lighting the fire, and sharing good food and company.

It’s a season that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and experience Akaroa at its most peaceful.

Run Akaroa

Lace up for Run Akaroa on 17 May and experience something a little bit extraordinary… have you ever run in a volcano? From the full marathon to the half marathon, 10km run or walk, and a fun kids’ dash, there’s a distance for everyone.

Set within Akaroa’s ancient volcanic crater, the course winds through breathtaking coastal scenery, rolling hills, and harbour views that almost distract from the challenge. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or just in it for the experience, this is one event where the setting is just as memorable as the finish line.

The Akaroa Harvest Festival

We’ve gathered an incredible line-up of vendors, vibrant displays, and live demonstrations that celebrate the best of the season. Think fresh flavours, local talent, and hands-on experiences around every corner.

Bring the whole crew along, there’s plenty to keep everyone smiling with games, face painting, a children’s sand saucer competition, and a showcase-worthy produce competition.

A visit to Barry’s Bay Cheese is a true taste of the Bays. This small, traditional factory has been crafting rich, flavour-packed cheeses for generations. Step inside and you’ll find shelves lined with locally made favourites, each one telling a story of the land, the milk, and the people behind it. It’s the kind of place where a quick stop turns into a delicious detour… and you’ll definitely be leaving with something tucked under your arm.

Cruising the harbour on the Fox II Yacht is Akaroa at its most effortless. Think calm waters, coastal views that unfold with every turn, and that salty breeze that instantly slows everything down.
Whether you’re soaking up the sunshine on deck or spotting wildlife along the way, this is one of those “this is what I came for” experiences. Relaxed, scenic, and just a little bit magic

As the air turns crisp in the Bays, Glowing Sky Clothing has you wrapped (beautifully) for the season. Think soft layers, cosy textures, and effortless pieces that carry you from fresh morning strolls to fireside evenings. It’s all about relaxed style with a touch of coastal charm.
Because autumn in Akaroa isn’t just something you feel… it’s something you wear

School Holiday Adventures

Looking for easy wins with the kids these holidays? We’ve got you covered…
Start with a wander through Garden of Tane or the Children’s Bay Walk, where little explorers can spot the rhino, the moa, and even an alligator hiding along the way.
It’s still not too cold for an ice cream (and honestly, is it ever?), so make that a non-negotiable stop. Then swing by the Akaroa Information Centre for even more ideas to keep everyone entertained.
Need a cosy break? Dive into local stories at the Akaroa Museum or head a little further to Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum, both guaranteed to spark curiosity (and maybe a few “did you know?!” moments).
And when it’s time to slow things down… drop a line off one of the many wharves and see what you can catch.
Simple, fun, and just the right amount of adventure.
