History
Le Bons Bay sits quietly on the eastern edge of Banks Peninsula, a place shaped by both its natural shelter and its long history of human connection. The bay was one of the earliest sites of European settlement in the area, named after French whalers who anchored here in the early 1800s. Its protected waters and fertile land made it a practical home for farming families, and that legacy still shows today in the scattered historic homes, old fences, and the enduring sense that this is a place built on self-reliance and community.
What draws people to Le Bons Bay now is its understated beauty and easy pace. The wide, gently curving beach is perfect for swimming, picnics, and long walks with the sound of the sea as constant company. On calm days, the bay suits kayaking and paddleboarding, while anglers try their luck from shore or small boats. Walking tracks in the surrounding hills reward a bit of effort with sweeping coastal views and glimpses of native birdlife.
Le Bons Bay doesn’t ask for much. Just time, attention, and a willingness to slow down.
