Orion Powerhouse Gallery Akaroa

The Akaroa Art Gallery becomes a vibrant hub in the warmer months, attracting visitors and holiday-makers to experience the talent of local and internationally recognized artists from Banks Peninsula and beyond.

Located in the historic Orion Powerhouse, built in 1911 to house Akaroa’s hydro-electric power equipment, the gallery is a testament to the town’s rich history. In 1970, local resident Patricia Bosshard transformed the empty building into a gallery and concert venue, fostering a creative community. Today, the gallery is cherished by a membership of 150 people from across Canterbury, hosting a range of exhibitions, intimate musical events, and workshops.
