Fools & Dreamers: Regenerating a Native Forest is a new 30-minute documentary telling the story of Hinewai Nature Reserve, its kaitiaki Hugh Wilson and the commitment of the Maurice White Native Forest Trust to regenerate marginal, hilly farmland into native forest.
When, in 1987, Hugh let the local community know about his plans to use gorse as a nurse canopy for self-sown native seedlings, the plan was considered by some the sort to be expected only of “fools and dreamers”.
Now, as those of you have visited Hinewai know, the reserve's valleys are resplendent with native forest canopy, where birds and other wildlife are abundant and 47 known waterfalls are in permanent flow.
If you missed out on a seat the premiere screenings, Akaroa Cinema will be showing the film every day at midday from the week of 24 June until further notice.
