Join a small group tour from Akaroa over one of the most scenic back country roads by 4WD van to see and experience a thriving Little penguin colony and how 30+ years of conservation efforts have saved it from extinction.

We have options for all to enjoy including 2- and 4-hour Scenic nature tours, Evening penguin safari, Sea-kayaking safaris in a marine reserve, hiking in ancient forest or even our 24-hour Pohatu package with a night in the middle of the penguin colony.

Tours leave from our booking office in Akaroa and your guide will transport you by 4WD mini-van over the crater rim of the long extinct Akaroa volcano to Pohatu/Flea bay where the penguins are. Photo stops along the way and up to 700 meters on the edge of the rim where you can gaze across Akaroa harbour and enjoy stunning views of the endless Pacific Ocean as you learn about the area’s rich history and unique wildlife.

Once arrived at the bay be greeted by friendly pet sheep, learn about the conservation efforts, take a walk around the bay and in season see White-flippered penguins, Canterbury’s unique variant of the little penguin, as we monitor nesting site(s) to check on the well-being of the colony.

To this day, the Helps family continue to be leaders in conservation and their efforts continue to be fully self-funded via Pohatu Penguins’ tours. When purchasing a tour, you have a positive input on our little Korora.
