Pigeon Bay Church

The Knox Church of Pigeon Bay is very special, designed by the well know architect of his day, Samuel Hurst Seager CBE which reveals his influence of the English Arts and Crafts movement. The church, built with local labour using timber milled from Pigeon Bay in 1899, stands proudly by the waterfront looking up the bay. This church is a community run consecrated church and can be used for weddings, christenings and small functions.

Marquee For Hire

Large marquee for hire within Banks Peninsula. Akaroa and Bays Lions Club have a framed marquee available for hire for all occasions. Particulary suitable for weddings and private functions. All proceeds from the hire will go to support our local charitable causes.

  • 9m x 9 m size  : hire fee  $600

*The Building Act requires a Building Consent for any Marquee of more than 100 square metres. The consent fee at April 2018 was $540 and is payable to Christchurch City Council in addition to the hire fee. Lions Club obtains the Building Consent on behalf of the hirer.

The 9m x 9m size does not require a Building Consent.

Hire includes delivery, set up, and dismantle anywhere on Banks Peninsula. 

All proceeds from the hire will go to support our local charitable causes.

Pigeon Bay Settlers’ Hall

The Pigeon Bay Settlers Hall was built in 1921 right on the beautiful waterfront looking up the bay to the sea. The newly refurbished Hall comprises a Main Hall with large curtained stage and wooden floor, which can seat 200, a Meeting Room for up to 40 people, and its own updated kitchen facilities. The Main Hall is ideal for wedding receptions, social  gatherings, and Art exhibitions. There is also a  room available for meetings, gatherings and musical evening which carters for smaller groups (40 people) .

The Gaiety (Hall, Akaroa)

The Gaiety, Akaroa is situated in Rue Jolie, Akaroa. It contains a main hall and meeting room and full kitchen facilities. Car parking for 40, with 3 accessible parks is provided on the adjacent section. The hall is available for hire from CCC. The prices vary depending on what the occasion is. Casual bookings can be made in person at the Akaroa Service Desk, 40D Rue Lavard or through the CCC Booking Line on 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169.

The main hall can accommodate 358 people standing and 150-160 people seated comfortably around tables. Using the hall and the fixed seating in the gallery, 250 people can be seated concert style. The supper room can accommodate 150 people standing.

John and Lesley are lucky enough to live at Blythcliffe, they really enjoy welcoming guests to share its special history and place in Akaroa. They’re very well-travelled around NZ and happy to offer handy local travel knowledge.


Thought to have been designed by Samuel Charles Farr based on drawings by the Australian architect John Verge, Blythcliffe is Akaroa's oldest and most loved grand old houses; our own stately home. Built in 1857, Blythcliffe sits within its own three acres of extensive private grounds and is listed as an Historic Place Category 1 with Heritage New Zealand, Pouhere Taonga. Enjoy full access to our beautiful gardens, croquet lawn and petanque terrace. Take a walk in the Blythcliffe private forest, protected by a conservation order and containing many spectacular examples of native trees, plants and birds. Feed our tame eels in the Balguerie Stream as it tumbles over its rocky bed. Or – just lie in the sun and enjoy the peace and total privacy of Blythcliffe.

Our Rooms

The Stables at Blythcliffe is perfect for those who enjoy their privacy; a completely self-contained, luxurious converted stable building adjacent to the main house at ground floor level. It has its own grape lined, large sunny courtyard, perfect for breakfast or evening drinks. It is a very comfortable open plan space, generously furnished in antiques with one exception – an extremely comfortable super king size bed! You'll also enjoy the sitting and dining area with a modern kitchen and separate bathroom with shower and claw foot bath – candles, champagne and bubble bath provided! The Stables has a small TV with Netflix and a CD player. There is enough room to add up to two single beds for children or a crib, extra costs apply, please inquire.


The Rose Room, one of three rooms available in the main house at Blythcliffe, is a wonderfully light and sunny room that comfortably accommodates two. It is located on the first floor and accessed by a steepish, old staircase and the main hallway, you have access via French Doors to the balcony overlooking the croquet lawn and gardens to the harbour beyond, the perfect spot for breakfast or an evening drink with the birds!

Your private bathroom, with shower only, is located right next door to your room and accessed from the main hallway, robes provided. If travelling with friends, consider adding a second queen size room to The Rose Room; located just across the hallway, the bathroom will be shared with the friends room. Please inquire if you are unsure.
There is no TV in Rose Room, but you will have unlimited wifi for all of your streaming needs. Tea and coffee making facilities are shared with The Willow Room guests in a small sitting room, also off the main hallway that leads onto the balcony.


The Willow Room is directly across the hallway from Rose Room. These two rooms are perfect for friends travelling together who do not wish to share bathroom facilities and is another of the three rooms available in the main house at Blythcliffe. Located on the eastern corner of the main house on our first floor and accessed via an old steep-ish staircase and the main hallway, the morning sun pours into this peaceful queen size room with lovely garden and stream views. Willow Room has an ensuite bathroom with claw foot bath and walk in shower, bubble bath and candles provided, this is a wonderfully quiet and relaxing room. There is no TV in Willow Room, but you will have unlimited wifi for all of your streaming needs. Tea and coffee making facilities are shared with The Rose Room guests in a small sitting room, also off the main hallway that leads onto the balcony, perfect for an  evening glass of wine.
