Matariki marks the beginning of the Māori New Year, signalled by the rising of the Matariki star cluster in the winter sky. It is a special time to pause, remember those who have passed, celebrate the present with whānau and friends, and look ahead with hope for the year to come. Rooted in reflection, gratitude and renewal, Matariki encourages us to reconnect with one another, our communities, and the natural world.
The national theme for Matariki 2026 is “Matariki Herenga Waka” (“Matariki, the mooring place of many canoes”). This year’s theme celebrates inclusion, belonging and coming together, recognising that Matariki is for everyone. It reminds us that, like many waka gathering in one place, our communities are strongest when people from all backgrounds come together to share stories, traditions, food and friendship.
