Matariki Friday 10th November

Matariki is a special time in Aotearoa, marking the Māori New Year and inviting us to pause, reflect and reconnect. It is a season for remembering those who have passed, giving thanks for the present, and looking ahead with hope to the year to come. As the stars of Matariki rise in the winter sky, communities across the country come together to share kai, spend time with whānau and celebrate the traditions and values that make this season so meaningful.

Each year, one of the stars within the Matariki cluster helps guide the focus of celebrations. In 2026, that focus is Ururangi, the star associated with the winds, reminding us of the power and movement of te taiao and the changing seasons around us. Here in Akaroa and the Bays, Matariki is also a wonderful time to visit Takapūneke, a place of deep cultural and historical significance. Standing above the harbour, it offers space for quiet reflection, remembrance and connection to the stories of this place, making it a fitting place to pause and acknowledge the spirit of Matariki.

Short walk guide: Ōnawe Peninsula Walk (Akaroa Harbour)
Some walks are about the view. Ōnawe is about the story behind it. Ōnawe is a small volcanic headland that juts into Akaroa Harbour, accessed between Duvauchelle and Barrys Bay. Today it is a peaceful walking spot. Historically, it is one of the most significant places in Banks Peninsula as a major Ngāi Tahu pā site. It is remembered as a place of both strength and tragedy in local history. Because of this, it is considered tapu (sacred), and visitors are asked to treat it with respect and not bring dogs or food.
Access is at low tide and views from the ridge are panoramic.

It’s a WILDLIFE here in Akaroa & The Bays.

Take to the water and you could find yourself alongside the world’s smallest and rarest dolphin, the playful Hector’s dolphin, as they leap and surf through the harbour. Along the rocky coastline, New Zealand fur seals can often be seen basking in the sun or playing in the shallows, while little penguins (kororā) quietly return to shore under the cover of dusk after a day spent fishing at sea.

For those fortunate enough to be here at just the right moment, the surprises don’t stop there. Orca occasionally cruise into Akaroa Harbour in search of stingrays, creating unforgettable moments for locals and visitors alike. At certain times of the year, whales may also be spotted passing offshore, reminding us that these waters are part of one of the world’s great marine highways.

Look up and you’ll discover another world of wildlife. Native birds fill the bays, forests and wetlands with colour and song. Listen for the melodic call of the bellbird, spot tūī darting between flowering trees, watch shags perched on rocky outcrops, or catch sight of seabirds soaring effortlessly above the dramatic cliffs. Every walk, every lookout and every beach offers the chance to discover something new.

The beauty of Akaroa and the Bays is that wildlife isn’t confined to a single reserve or attraction. It is woven into everyday life. Whether you’re exploring by boat, kayak, bike or on foot, nature is never far away.

No two days are ever the same. The changing seasons, tides and weather all bring different opportunities for wildlife encounters, making every visit unique. That’s part of the magic of this place. You never quite know what you’ll see next.

So, how many of these incredible creatures are already on your wildlife bucket list? More importantly… how many will you tick off during your visit to Akaroa and the Bays?
